Grants
  • In 2007-2009, under the program entitled «Medico-Biological Problems and Human Environment», a study was performed entitled «Biological Leukemia Subtypes among Residents of Different Regions of Ukraine, who were Exposed to Ionizing Radiation in their Childhood».
  • During the period 2008-2009, according to the Agreement between Ukraine Health Ministry and the Council of Scientific and Technological Research of the Turkish Republic, a study was carried out entitled «Cytomorphological, Immunocytochemical, and Molecular Features of Leukemia in People Exposed to Ionizing Radiation».
  • In 2008, research was done entitled «Development and Introduction into Clinical Practice of Immunocytochemical Methods for Diagnosis of Malignant Tumors in Children», which was supported by a grant of the President of Ukraine for young scientists.
  • Since 2010, as part of the program entitled «Fundamentals of Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology», a study has been carried out entitled «Study of Marker Antigens and Receptors of Leukemic Stem Cells. Development of Innovative Immunocytochemical Test Kits for Diagnosis of Leukemia and Myelodysplastic (Pre-Leukemic) Syndromes».
  • In 2011, a scientific and technological innovation project was completed entitled «Develop and Implement in Clinical Practice a Complex of Immunocytochemical and Molecular Genetic Technologies for Diagnosis of Acute Leukemia» (jointly with the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine). As a result of the project, modern technologies for diagnosis of acute leukemia were developed and introduced into clinical practice of hematologic departments in Kyiv, Crimea and 20 oblasts of Ukraine.
  • In 2012, a scientific and technological innovation project was completed entitled «Comprehensive Diagnosis of Myeloproliferative Diseases in Regional Cancer Centers» (jointly with the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine). We received 18 acts certifying the implementation of the proposed integrated diagnostics involving cytomorphological, cytochemical, immunocytochemical and molecular genetic examinations.
  • In 2013-2014, research is being performed entitled «Mechanisms of Caspase-Dependent Death of Leukemia Cells Exposed in vitro to New Synthetic Combinations that Affect the Polymerization of Tubulin». This research is performed under joint programs of the State Foundation for Basic Research, the State Agency of Ukraine for Science, Innovation and Information, and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
  • In 2013-2015, research is being performed entitled «Identification of Apoptotic Links that Define Multiple Drug Resistance and Cross-Resistance in Human Leukemic Cells». This research is performed under joint programs of the State Foundation for Basic Research, the State Agency of Ukraine for Science, Innovation and Information, and the Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS).
Conferences

For many years, the Department of Immunocytochemistry and Oncohematology has not only actively participated in international scientific conferences, but also holds annual scientific workshops.

In 2012, the Department actively participated in four scientific-practical conference with international participation:

  • Role of Modern Methods of Diagnosis of Cancer in the Personalization of Treatment (Yaremche, 16-17 March 2012)
  • Type II Hematology Tutorial. Diagnostic Work-Up of Hematological Malignancies. Focus on Lymphoid Malignancies (Kyiv, 18-19 May 2012)
  • Topical Problems of Regenerative Medicine (Kyiv, 4-5 October 2012)
  • Modern Approaches to Diagnosis and Treatment of Lymphoma (Kyiv, 18-19 October 2012)

The Department took active part in the Congress of the Ukrainian Society of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics entitled «Current Methods of Laboratory Diagnosis of Internal and Infectious Diseases» held in November 2012.

Scientific workshops and master classes on Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis of Hematologic Diseases are annually conducted on the basis of the Department of Immunocytochemistry and Oncohematology, at the initiative of the Head of Department, Professor D.F. Gluzman, and with support of the management of the Institute.

In April 2013, as part of the Second International Medical Forum, the Department conducted a master class with a demonstration of unique cytological specimens of blood and bone marrow, and discussion of interesting diagnostic cases.

Professor D.F. Gluzman was invited as an expert to the International Commission for Verification of Diagnoses and Malignant Diseases of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues as part of a joint project with the United States dealing with the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident.

The department is the basis for training and conducting master works of students of higher educational establishments of Ukraine.

Training at the workplace

In recent years, the Department of Immunocytochemistry and Oncohematology has been practicing training at the workplace for clinical laboratory technicians, medical cytologists, oncologists and hematologists. They familiarize themselves with cytomorphological and cytochemical laboratory methods for examination of cells from peripheral blood and bone marrow.

Practical training is conducted dealing with diagnosis of various forms and cytologic variations of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues in children and adult patients. The trainees are granted certificates at the end of the internship period.

Collaboration

For many years, coordination and integration of research activities has been carried out between scientists and the Department of Immunocytochemistry and Oncohematology and clinicians:

  1. Hematologists of two hematologic departments of the 9th Clinical Hospital in Kyiv
  2. Doctors of pediatric departments of the National Cancer Institute of Ukraine and Kyiv City Oncology Center
  3. Doctors of the Kyiv Regional Oncologic Center
  4. Doctors specialized in oncohematology from the Crimea and 20 regional clinical hospitals of Ukraine

The Department of Immunocytochemistry and Oncohematology has close international ties with:
